I have fitted three Trophy TBs to date and thought i had done a good job - i mean it really is very simple, 4 bolts, 2 hoses, 1 throttle cable, 1 multiplug and a spring/jubelee clip.
However, i was at the Brown and Gammons open day yesterday and watched them install a Trophy TB and was very puzzled. It seems that once you have physically bolted it all in and reconnected everything, you then need to plug the car into Testbook and set the IACV to suit the Trophy TB!
There is a little adjustment screw on the Trophy TB, that adjusts air flow to the stepper motor and once on Testbook and up to temperature, you get a display showing where it should be set and where it currently is set. You then simply wind the screw in or out until the line showing the current air flow falls in the correct zone.
My one was way out, indeed it was nearly off the scale! Speaking to the mechanic at B+G it turns out that if it had been much higher then i would have had idling problems. I wonder if this explains the rash of idling problems a few people have had over the past months on various forums...
Anyway, first impressions are excellent - i've been running a Trophy TB on Scarlet now almost since the Trophy 160 was launched and whilst i'd felt there was some performance gain to be had from it, mainly from the throttle response side of things, it wasn't until i drove home yesterday that i realised that the reason i was less than impressed with it was because it wasn't set up properly. The car feels a lot more 'lively' difficult to put your finger on it, but it just seems 'perkier' somehow!
So, a thanx to B+G for teaching an old dog some new tricks and for sorting out my Trophy TB.
